With the current economy in a down turn, companies are cutting back on training budgets. Although I sometimes pay for my own training, I’m afraid to spend any money right now, not knowing if I’ll have a job in 3 months!!
I’d be interested in hearing other people’s experiences and thoughts on this. Should I put my own training on the back burner for now? Should I fight harder to get my company to continue the expense (and disruption) of training for the PMs in the company?

Katt, I would say now is the time to focus on training and self-development. With so much uncertainty in the marketplace, all of us need to prepare ourselves for future opportunities. This does not mean enroll in night school or sign up for week-long training programs. If money is a constraint right now then take advantage of the many websites, podcasts, blogs that are available. You can continue your learning and development through others. They are free, fun and can be part of your professional network. Good Luck!

Hi Jerry,
Agree with your comments; we should continue our learning process for future opportunities / challenges. We can own our own development – others can play an important part but ultimately it’s down to us.
All the same, there needs to be a change in the current industy environment, particularly in the areas of employment and management best practices.

I’m a for an architecture firm. We are in the throughs of strategic planning. One of my tasks is to verify the pros and cons of in house PM education/certification og architects vs. hiring proffessional PM’s to run/manage the architects.
What can you offer as sage advice on this.
Thank You.
